Stonebridge Corporate marks 20 years with ambitious growth and a people-first culture

Stonebridge Corporate is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a bold plan to double in size over the next five years, while staying true to the independence, culture, and client-first approach that have defined the business since its inception.

From start-up to multi-specialist brokerage

Founded in Croydon and now operating from a modern HQ in Epsom with a second office in Yorkshire, Stonebridge has grown from a team of just four people into a multi-specialist brokerage recognised for deep client understanding and exceptional retention rates.

"When I launched Stonebridge, my vision was to build an independent brokerage that stood apart for service, continuity, and long-term relationships,” said Ben Burford, CEO. “Two decades later, that vision remains the same. We’ve grown steadily because we’ve never lost sight of what matters — putting clients first and building trust that lasts."

Alan Passmore, Managing Director, who joined 15 years ago, reflected on the journey: "When I arrived, we had a buzzing office of 13 or 14 people — very sales-driven and lively. Ben had already built strong relationships with underwriters, and together we worked to strengthen client service and retention. Since then, the business has trebled in size, and now we’re aiming to double again in the next five years by doing the right things well and scaling them."

A holistic client offering

Stonebridge has expanded from commercial insurance into private clients, protection (life and medical), and a niche print division offering specialist breakdown cover.

Ben Burford added, "Our approach is straightforward. We take the time to understand our clients in depth and make sure we can meet all of their needs under one roof. That’s how loyalty is earned, and that’s how we’ve built a reputation that stands the test of time."

The business has achieved double-digit organic growth in the last two completed financial years, driven by referrals, sponsorships, and strong personal networks. More than half of Stonebridge’s suppliers are also clients — testament to the trust built through relationships.

The Hedron advantage

Stonebridge makes full use of the support available through the Hedron Network, from enhanced market access to wholesale placement tools such as the Broking Desk.

Ben Burford said, "Our independence is strengthened, not compromised, by collaboration. Hedron amplifies our voice with insurers and gives us the resources to secure the best outcomes for clients, while we remain firmly in control of our direction."

Stonebridge was recognised as Hedron Broker of the Year in 2022, further underlining its strong standing in the market.

Culture as the Growth Driver

At the core of Stonebridge’s success is its people-first culture. More than 40% of staff have joined through employee referrals, and long service is the norm.

The business invests heavily in training, development, and apprenticeships — designed not only for school leavers but also for career changers. Apprentices rotate across departments and many have gone on to build lasting careers within the business.

"Continuity comes from investing in people,” said Burford. “I’ve worked hard to build a team around me that shares the same values — independence, professionalism, and client service. We don’t just hire for the present; we hire for potential and create an environment where people grow with us."

The new Epsom HQ has further enhanced the company’s appeal, with every interviewee in the last seven months stating their desire to be part of Stonebridge.

Looking Ahead

With a clear five-year plan, a strong leadership team, and a culture built on trust and independence, Stonebridge is positioning itself as one of the UK’s standout independent brokers.

Burford concluded, "Our strategy is simple. We’ll keep doing more of what works: looking after clients, investing in people, and staying true to the independent culture that has made us successful for 20 years."
